Graduate Advising

I advise students from different disciplines, units, and graduate degrees.

Current Graduate Students If you are interested in working with me, please prioritize doing coursework with me. This is an important process of understanding how each other works, thinks, and writes. However, if you were unable to take courses with me, please do reach out as early as you can about your interest in working with me. I prefer direct and clear email showing interest, even if we may later decide that another faculty may best serve this role. I will not be chairing committees for awhile but am available to serve as a committee member. When you reach out to me, please include below. I will ask you to follow up with an office hour appointment. If you are reaching out for reference materials, I advise you to work with the subject librarian, who would be best able to assist your research.

  • Specific request/role you are asking me to serve in your project (why and how do I fit into your project?)
  • Brief project description
  • What stage you are at, what remains until you are ABD
  • Your CV
  • Other faculty members in your committee

If you are currently working with me, here is a good reminder for you to:

  • Share a yearly short update email if possible
  • If and when you need letters, please notify as early as possible, and no later than a month before the letter deadline. I will ask you for specific things I need for the letter. Please remind me one week before the deadline.
  • Share a short meeting agenda or material to look at prior to office hour meetings.
  • I will not be able to offer feedback under a month turnaround, unless we discussed and agreed otherwise.
  • Meetings should have specific purposes and questions. If you need to check in or ask me something short, email will be the best and most prompt way.
  • When I provide feedback, you don’t have to take them all. But I will not offer feedback again on the same material if it has not changed substantially since my last review.

Prospective Graduate Students I often receive emails from prospective students. If and when you email me, please understand that I do not have direct say in your admission to said programs. I am currently available to advise students, but whether we will work together will be determined by both of us once you are accepted and after we have a chance to discuss your projects and interests, to decide if I am the best person for this role. You are welcome to share your interest to work with me and intent to apply as a prospective student by email, but do note that I am not available to meet or give you feedback before you are admitted. Please do not send me your CV, application draft, or writing materials. A short description of your training and future project will suffice. For any questions about the program to which you are applying, please consult the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the program.
