Gender Equity in Academic Research Symposium
Building Bridges and Amplifying Voices of Women, Non-Binary, and Gender-Diverse Students
Abstract submission deadline: March 11, 2022 [extended to March 18!]
In-person conference date: April 14th, 2022
Graduate Women Across Northwestern (GWAN) is organizing our 3rd annual Gender Equity in Academic Research Symposium (GEARS), which began in celebration of 150 years of women at Northwestern. The goals of GEARS are to amplify the voices of those who have historically been silenced, to recognize their important research contributions, and to foster a sense of community among students from different disciplines. Through a series of student presentations and workshops, GEARS will showcase the contributions women, non-binary, and gender-diverse students have made to Northwestern and the larger research community.
The goals of this symposium are to:
- Amplify the voices of those who have historically been silenced
- Recognize the important contributions women, non-binary, and gender-diverse graduate students have made to both Northwestern and the larger research community
- Provide opportunities to engage in reflective discourse around gender equity
- Promote community and collaboration among students from different disciplines
Call for Abstracts
We are currently accepting abstracts! We invite graduate students across all disciplines to submit abstracts by March 11, 2022 [extended to March 18]. The format for presentations will be 5-minute talks that will utilize a PowerPoint format or a poster.
We welcome research on all topics and in all stages of progress. In celebrating the inclusion of women at Northwestern, we recognize that many students hold intersectional identities. We, therefore, strongly encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to apply to present.
Submission Materials:
Abstracts can be submitted through this form and will be accepted until Friday, March 11, 2022. Required materials include a 250-word abstract with the following:
- General research question / problem
- Brief description of results
- Broader significance / motivation for research
Please keep in mind that the symposium is intended for a general audience. Avoid using jargon and focus on broader themes and significance of your work. GWAN will also be hosting a poster preparation workshop in late March. General registration to attend GEARS will be open in late March.
Symposium Registration
This event is open to all faculty, staff, and students at Northwestern. Registration is free but required. The form to register will be available shortly.
