GWAN plans hosts a variety of events and programs open to all graduate students and postdocs at Northwestern University. Please join our listserv and see our events calendar (on the right sidebar) for the most up-to-date information on upcoming events. See our photo gallery of past events here.
Meals with Strangers
One of our most popular programs, Meals with Strangers brings together female graduate students from different departments for a friendly meal at a local restaurant. A GWAN member hosts a dinner at a restaurant of their choice and parties are no larger than six students. This allows for a close-knit, friendly environment, where individuals can meet friends from different departments. We host 4-5 dinners each quarter. Please see our Meals with Strangers page for more information. This program is co-sponsored by the Northwestern International Office.
Social Events
Sponsored by a Community Building Grant, GWAN hosts numerous social events throughout the year. Popular events have included Galentine’s Day celebrations, ice cream parties, pottery nights at Norris ARTica studios, and movie nights.
Service Events
GWAN members volunteer at numerous events throughout the Evanston and Chicago areas. In the past, service events have involved gardening, helping at children’s events, and preparing meals at soup kitchens. Members also organized clothing drives and volunteered at annual events such the Norris Center’s Project Pumpkin.
Health & Wellness Events
GWAN offers a variety of programs and events that promote health and wellness. Past events have included Yoga at the Lakefill, a Mindful Eating Workshop, and a lunch social for bike commuters.
Professional Development Events
GWAN plans a variety of events that allow members to explore various professional opportunities. Additionally, GWAN maintains a LinkedIn Group and a growing alumni network. Past events have included a Dress for Success Workshop, a book discussion on bias in the workplace, and talks from GWAN alumni.
