An additional aspect of this world history and humanities project is to examine the idea of social progress and break the theme down into clearly definable questions such as: is the world getting wealthier over time? Is the world approaching equality? Is the world having more fun? Using South Africa to look at leisure, recreation, and art will assist students in answering these questions. Popular magazines are an excellent medium to explore and contemplate these questions and to also illustrate the complexities of South African society and challenge stereotypes of the old Apartheid narrative. Hopefully, this exploration will help the students appreciate South Africa as a living breathing country that knows how to enjoy itself and perseveres despite its past struggles.
