Maps

After reading the first chapter of the novel, students are asked to draw a map of Hillbrow based off of descriptions given in the book. Maps can be literal or more stylized, depending on student interpretation.

By Matthew: “The assignment was to create a map, to the best of your ability, of Hillbrow, in accordance to how it was described in the text. I examined the text, looking for descriptions of Hillbrow, and used these descriptions to form a map of the neighborhood.”

By Valerie: “By drawing the map I was able to get a visual representation of Hillbrow after the fact”

By Leah: “I drew a map of what I interpreted Hillbrow as, a busy, crowded town full of violence. Creating the map helped to better my knowledge of what Hillbrow is like.”
