Mpe makes several references to the South African musical group Stimela and their songs “The World through the Eyes of a Child” and “Fountains of Love.” The songs were released in 1994 and have particular meaning to the character Refetse. “The World through the Eyes of a Child” had special meaning to Mpe because it was a song about a neglected, homeless child, exposed to street violence and blood, who subsequently grew to be scared of darkness. It was a song of prolonged pain and suffering; but it was also a song of hope and love (p. 85).
