Creating a Global Understanding of Gender and Sexuality

Session Overview:

This presentation will focus on expanding Therapist knowledge of international terminology and concepts about gender and sexuality in an effort to build more inclusive, respectful, and equitable spaces for international students of gender expansive identities. By exploring international gender and sexuality terminology and ideas, the presenters’ goals are to illuminate biases that may be present within therapists as well as provide effective techniques and exercises that therapists can use to make therapy a more inclusive space for clients with intersectional identities. Attendees will come away with an understanding of not only why it is important to consider language in the context of intersectional client identities, but also with techniques for how they can approach gender and sexuality with international clients.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will review and be able to describe and define U.S. based gender and sexuality terminology
2. Attendees will learn terminology used in countries outside of the U.S. to describe gender and sexuality
3. Attendees will gain an understanding of contexts when non-U.S. gender and sexuality terminology might be present in the counseling session
4. Attendees will learn effective techniques, questions, and exercises that they can use to make the therapy session an inclusive safe space for clients with intersectional identities
5. Attendees will challenge their own assumptions and biases that may be present in therapy sessions when working with clients of intersectional identities
