Exploring Chicago

“My friends and I decided to go to Chicago on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, we decided to visit the Art Museum and it was worth the ride there. All of the beautiful paintings and artwork took our attention for 2 hours. After, we of course were starving so we headed to Lou Malnati’s to try Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza. Let me tell you, it is worth the money and I’m not the one you typically find eating pizza. On Sunday, I was with the same group and we walked around Navy Pier and headed to one of Chicago’s beaches. At the beach, we decided to do the trend where you dig a heart in the sand and put your phone inside. It took a while to figure it out but we ended up with some awesome pictures!” –Katherine K., Summer ’23 CPP

“In the city of Chicago, it’s easy to take the L downtown and take pictures of the Chicago river and Lake Michigan, and of course, take group photos and selfies in front of the famous Chicago Bean. There was a mix of Chicagoan and non-Chicagoan students which made it so even international students had some idea on how to explore the town.” –Ayan P., Summer ’23 CPP

“A few friends and I travelled to the Pride Parade on Sunday, and it was a ton of fun (except for the rain), but we had decided to leave at about 4:30, because one of the people I was with had another commitment, and we wanted to beat the rush of people leaving. So 4:30 comes, and I pull up Apple maps to try and find a train station nearby so that we can leave. I look at the closest one, but its on the other side of the parade, and we can’t cross the street while the parade is still going, so I scroll to the next one. Also on the other side of the street. And so on and so forth, until I realize that every train station within a 7-mile radius is on the other side of the street that the parade is going down. We ended up walking nearly 3 miles to get to the back of the parade and loop around so that we could take a train back to Northwestern, past at least half of the parade.” –Henry W., Summer ’23 CPP

“My friends and I went into downtown Chicago to do all the classic tourist experiences, except we got caught in a flash thunderstorm. By the time we found shelter, we were all so wet it wasn’t even worth it, so we just went out in the rain. It was one of my favorite moments from the whole two weeks, because we were all laughing and having the time of our lives.” –Zaida B., Summer ’23 CPP

“I really liked Broken English Taco Pub.” –Summer ’23 CPP Student

“I spent the Saturday at Chicago with three other friends. We started out taking the L, I was lucky since I have a brother living here so I was able to ask him the train route to take. My friends and I visited the touristy spots including The Bean, Buckingham Fountain, Willis Tower, Chicago River, and Michigan Avenue. The city is so walkable it didn’t feel too tiring. The entire trip was around six hours. We ate at The Dearborn which was very affordable and delicious. Remember to take lots of pictures!” –Zoey J., Summer ’23 CPP

“My friends and I took the train into the city over the weekend. I found downtown Chicago to be surprisingly walkable: migrating from the bean to shops on the other end of Michigan Ave. There was so much to take in and so many places to stop in. Our favorite was Magnolia Bakery, as we were all blown away by their delicious banana pudding.” –Alex H., Summer ’23 CPP
