Pictures of Dishes Prepared by Students at their home

I love to cook with and for the students. It brings me kind of a cascade of happiness when a student repeats the dishes she/he learned with me.  It brings me great contentment, to know that I have been able to pass on to others something which is dear to my own heart — and, of course, that “something” involves food, which nourishes and sustains life itself  It also warms my heart that the foods which I so enjoy preparing and sharing bring students together in a special companionship and conversation, the needful and precious connection for which every longs!

With Julie Payne-Kirchmeier Vice president for Student Affairs

On May 26, we had a very special guest, who came to cook with us.  Julie Payne-Kirchmeier came “to learn” to prepare some dishes with a little of Rifka’s touch and secret ingredient. That day we prepared Horchata, Guacamole and Salsa.  We really have a lot of fun, special using the tool I named it “chacachaca”.

Here I am sharing some pictures that our Irazu took.  Thanks Irazu!

I am ready, let’s cook

Middle East and Latino Mash-Up

DATE: February 3, 2021

WHAT WE COOKED: Tabbouleh salad & Guacamole

SUMMARY: Due COVID, I was not able to have students at home. Danny Ohara film the cooking class. With the tabbouleh and guacamole I created a sandwich and added, some cheese (for the vegetarian) and turkey salami (for the students who like to eat meat).  Of course I did not add the salami together with the cheese, because the cheese was dairy.  We can use vegan cheese, and in this case, you can add the turkey salami.

Dishes from Spanish-Speaking Countries

I made this video for the students during one of my cooking classes. Danny filmed this demonstration for me while I was cooking.

On the menu:

These are all recipes from countries where Spanish is spoken – Venezuela, Argentina, and Spain. It shows how food has traveled and has been adapted throughout the world.

Cooking class before COVID hit!

Before the pandemic, our cooking class was at home.  I invite a group of 8-10 students to come and cook with me. After they cook, we eat together, and then we share the dishes with the residents. The following pictures were taken during winter quarter 2019.

That day, we prepared> Empanadas, couscous, hummus, eggplant salad and brownies.

Hope soon, we can cook at home again.

One of our first entrepreneur chefs!!

And after we cooked, we try the dishes, before
we shared with the rest of the residents.
Each dish was amazingly delicious!!
