Salmon Patties with Homemade Tomato Sauce

There are times when we need to make a quick dish because we do not have time to prepare any elaborate dish. The salmon patties are ideal for this situation. You can use fresh fish, or you can just open a can and mix some ingredients, and voilà!  The recipe I am sharing with you is one of my mom’s favorite meals. Each time I prepare it, I feel that I am in our kitchen. There are several variations, but I like my mother’s version, and here it is.

Ingredients

To prepare the patties

  • 6 or 8 fillets of boneless Salmon, ground
  • 1/2 cup of Cilantro, chopped
  • 5-6 fresh Garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 or 4 tablespoons of Seafood seasoning (ideally Pereg brand)
  • 1 or 1/2 teaspoon of Cumin (ideally Pereg brand)
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • Oil Spray (ideally PAM)

To prepare the sauce

  • 6 or 7 Roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cup of Cilantro, chopped
  • 3 or 4 fresh Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red Pepper, diced
  • 1 green Pepper, diced
  • 2 teaspoons of olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cup of water

Tools

  • 1 frying pan
  • 1 plastic bowl
  • 1 pot with a lid
  • 1 electric or manual blender
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 knife

Steps to prepare the dish

  1. Put the ground fillets in the bowl
  2. Add all the ingredients to prepare the patties, except the PAM oil
  3. Mix them stirring with the wooden spoon
  4. Leave the mix to rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Make small patties, around 1/2 each
  6. Spray the frying pan.
  7. Align the patties, leave 1/4 between each one.
  8. Turn over them when you see they are cooked.
  9. While you cook the patties, prepare the sauce
  10. Put all the ingredients for the sauce inside of the pot
  11. Stir them with a wooden spoon
  12. Cook them over medium heat for 10 minutes
  13. Add the patties and cover the pot.
  14. Cook for 30 minutes
  15. Pour the patties with the sauce in a server plate.

 

Notes

  • You can use any other fish. I never try it with tuna, I just do not like this fish.
  • You can use salmon in a can, if you prefer it. However, as I wrote in other recipes, I prefer fresh ingredients, whenever possible.
  • You can use tomatoes in a can.  However, here, too, I prefer fresh ones.
  • You can modify the recipe by adding your own ingredients.  For example, you can add onions, instead of garlic. However, do not mix both, since their flavors differ and complete.
  • You can eat them with or without the sauce. And in this case, you need to cook the patties longer.
