2023 Chicago Language Symposium
The 22nd Annual Chicago Language Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 on Northwestern University’s lakefront campus in Evanston, just north of the city of Chicago.
This year’s symposium is focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the World Language Classroom and will discuss topics such as:
- Gender equality in the language classroom
- Differentiated instruction
- Post pandemic challenges
- Linguistic and cultural diversity in the language classroom
- Culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching
- Equity and diversity in content-based instruction
- Confronting racial inequities in the language classroom
- Fostering inclusive learning environments
- “Translanguaging” in the heritage language classroom
- Supporting students with disabilities

Symposium Format
The Chicago Language Symposium offers an opportunity for lively and sustained conversation amongst a modest-sized group participants over the course of the Symposium’s sessions. The Symposium has been conceived as a primarily in-person event. Participants will be able to attend remotely, however opportunities for remote-participant interaction during sessions will be limited. All presenters must attend in-person.

Buffett Institute Panel and Workshop
On Friday afternoon, April 28, 2023, immediately preceding the symposium, Northwestern’s Buffett Institute for Global Affairs will host a complementary panel and workshop on inclusive teaching titled How to Make Foreign Language Textbooks Linguistically and Culturally Gender Bias-Free and Inclusive: Challenges and Recommendations.
