Writing an ARDEI-Context Question

Writing an ARDEI-Context Question

When approaching writing an ARDEI-context or focused question, there are two routes you can take. The first involves writing a problem from scratch. The second is to find an existing problem and adapt it by giving it background context that is based on well-researched resources and information and uplifts the voices of marginalized communities. Please see Example Problem from Chemical Engineering Separations & Other Examples for example problems that we have written. Additionally, you will find an ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet with questions to ask yourself about the problem you’ve written as a filtering mechanism to prevent harm.

Assessing Your ARDEI-Context Question

Additionally, you will find an ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet with questions to ask yourself about the problem you’ve written as a filtering mechanism to prevent harm. Please see Example Problem from Chemical Engineering Separations & Other Examples for a video walk through of the review sheet and the Understanding and Preventing Harm page for a discussion of these topics. Additionally, we have an example ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet filled out for the example Separations Homework Question you saw before. You will eventually also be using this same worksheet to assess problems written by your fellow colleagues if you choose to complete this workshop with colleagues. We highly recommend you look at this worksheet before writing the question to help guide how you approach and write the question.

Post-Workshop Assignment

  1. Look over the ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet with questions to ask yourself about the problem you will write. Looking over this in advance can help prevent harm upfront and guide your question writing.
  2. Develop an ARDEI-Context/Focused question from scratch or by adapting an existing textbook or other class problem.
  3. Assess your ARDEI-Context/Focused question using the ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet
  4. Find a colleague (ideally one who completed this worksheet) to use the ARDEI Harm Prevention Worksheet to assess your problem.
