Mini Challenge #3

Temple Run 2

According to REM, the Temple Run 2 game reminds you of a “Indiana Jones” adventure world, where you must keep running from the Gorilla to avoid being torn apart. You have power ups that you can utilize to unlock new characters, but the game’s aesthetics aren’t really appealing.

Subway Surfers

If the Gorilla is hunting in Temple Run 2, here the cops are closing in on you, so you should keep running as fast as you can. According to a report by Fuse Joplin, Subway Surfers has appealing graphics that provide the player with a fun time while playing the game. It comes with a hover board that you may use to play.

Comparing two games and their mechanics, I can say certainly Subway Surfers has always dominated in the subject of power-ups. Their power-ups are really fun to use, and can be used by all players. The system is fairly simple, power-ups appear while you play the game, and you can increase their duration time from the shop at a reasonable price. Temple Run power-ups tend to get confusing on how you’re supposed to use them. What’s the difference between power-ups and abilities? Temple Run had a pickup spawn which could make power-ups appear more often if you bought the upgrade. Whereas in Subway Surfers, you don’t need to increase frequency, it’s already at a fair rate. All in all, in terms of medium-term mechanics, Subway Surfers is just a cleaner version of Temple Run. Subway Surfers eliminates all unnecessary features, to create one simple yet fun endless run game.

Speaking of the long-term mechanics, in Temple Run 2, you can choose between 4 different characters, with different abilities each. Aside from coins, you also have the in-game currency of gems, which can allow you to survive death (much like a hoverboard). They also have different missions and goals to complete in order to level up. It also has a store that you can buy different abilities in. Some things you have to buy with real money, others, you don’t. Subway Surfers also offers many extra features. You can change your characters, buy a variety of things from the shop like hoverboards and mystery boxes, and complete different missions and goals.

Overall, Subway Surfers has that ‘just one more go’ feel. Due to it’s constant updates, you can never get bored with the game. It’s simplicity is probably one of the key points as to why it is so addicting. It’s a game where getting coins, unlocking new characters, and completing missions, is at just the right level. The game isn’t too hard or soft, there are very few cases where you get an accidental death. The game, and it’s mechanics are very simple to understand, and with it’s fun characters, obstacles, and settings, you can never get bored. Temple Run, meanwhile, is a frustrating game to me personally. Unpredictable deaths, impossible turns, and bit too challenging obstacles. That takes the addiction factor of a game. There is however always that feeling where you want to beat your high score, but that comes with every endless run game.
