Welcoming Petia Vlahovska

Today, we went to the Little Mexican Cafe for lunch and discussion with our newest faculty member, Petia Vlahovska! We are so excited to have a woman professor in ESAM again, and Petia is a wonderful fit for the department. She comes to us from Brown University and her research is broadly in fluid mechanics. Our lunch was a great time for discussion and learning more about Petia.

Northwestern GROW Conference

Members of WESAM and ESAM Participated this past weekend in GROW-Graduate Research Opportunities for Women here at Northwestern. It was a great weekend of outreach for college sophomores-seniors, and we hope that our efforts help those women in their graduate school decisions.

Faculty advisor and affiliated faculty Rosemary Braun gave a talk to the conference attendees, Rosemary also participated in the panel on academic careers in mathematics (with recent ESAM alum and current post-doc at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sara Clifton), and ESAM faculty Danny Abrams participated in a panel on the “nuts and bolts” of getting into graduate school. Multiple WESAM members participated in general discussions/mentoring and outreach with attendees.
