he 20th century has seen a large expansion in the fields of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, in part due to the leadership and support of the U.S. National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. From novel applications to novel approaches, continuum mechanics and thermodynamics are the foundation of many active application areas including (but not limited to) biomedicine, energetic materials and unconventional fossil fuel exploitation. The symposium will convene leaders in the field to present the latest work in the latter directions. The symposium will include talks on both fundamental aspects and frontier application problems. The talks will span both solid and fluid mechanics. Stochastic aspects to continuum mechanics and thermodynamics will also be considered. Finally, this symposium will also incorporate discussion of the legacy and influence of G. A. Maugin on modern continuum mechanics and thermodynamics.
