Freshman
Liam Melvin is a tenor trombonist from Guilford, Connecticut, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in trombone performance. He began playing trombone in his school concert band in 5th grade. He hated it, to such a degree that he nearly switched to clarinet before being introduced to jazz, which ultimately sparked his passion for music. Through his high school career, Liam was a member of the Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra, Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra, Neighborhood Music School Premier Jazz Ensemble, CMEA All-region Jazz and Concert Bands, CMEA All-state Honors Orchestra, and NAfME All-national Symphony Orchestra. He is also a composer, and has had two of his chamber compositions premiered by musicians of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. When not playing or writing music, he can be found attempting golf, watching Christopher Nolan’s filmography again, and hanging out with friends. He is very excited to be a member of the Northwestern trombone studio!
