Garett Byrne

Junior

Garett Byrne is a Junior bass trombonist. Coming from Walker, Louisiana, he has had to make a few adjustments to big city life, such as being too far from the bayou to hunt gators and his hovercraft “not being street legal.” However, he is acclimating more each day, and locals are now able to mostly understand him between the constant interjections of “Geaux Tigers!” and incessant references to the Adam Sandler movie “Waterboy.” Before coming to Northwestern, Garett had the opportunity to study with professors such as Steve Menard, David Jackson, Dan Satterwhite, Mark J. Thompson, George Curran, and Charlie Vernon. He has participated in summer festivals such as Brevard, Southeast Trombone Symposium, and International Trombone Festival. As well as bass trombone, Garett has performed on tenor trombone, euphonium, tuba, and French horn in a variety of styles. He is also an accomplished lyric bass-baritone, having studied in a private voice studio and participated in various choirs, even performing his own arrangements and soloing with ensembles. He also has experience in musical theatre, acting, and writing. Professor Mulcahy suggests that Garett study the voice instead of trombone, but Garett is stubborn and knows nothing as satisfying as blasting low notes and perpetually getting the hand from conductors.
