About

Every year, the Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University organizes a summer institute exploring different topics, methods, and theories through the practice of performance.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Summer Institute in Performance Studies
Northwestern University
July 8-12, 2019
Convener: Marcela A. Fuentes

The Center for Global Culture and Communication and the Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University invite applications from graduate students (MA, MFA, and/or PhD-track) and recent graduates for a five-day institute on trans-national feminist theories and practices. The institute will focus on interdisciplinary scholarship and artistic and activist practices that engage the politics of embodiment, gender and sexual dissidence, intersectionality, world-making, and coalition building through performance, broadly construed. Participants will work with prominent scholars, activists, and artists from the Americas in workshops and seminars. Students will be invited to share their artistic or scholarly work in fifteen-minute presentations.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS:

The Summer Institute is tuition-free. Up to twenty participants will be accepted, half from Northwestern and half from other colleges and universities. We welcome applications from all graduate students and recent graduates (regardless of discipline or performance experience) with an interest in the theory and practice of performance, intersectionality, and transnational studies. Submit your CV and a 500-word description of your research interest or project and how the Summer Institute will benefit your work. List one reference and their contact information (reference letters are not required), and include your institutional affiliation, indicating whether you are an MA or PhD candidate and the stage of your graduate work. If you have completed your degree, please note date of completion and current employment status (e.g. postdoctoral fellow, tenure track faculty, independent scholar). Assemble this into one Word or PDF document and send it to: marcela.fuentes@northwestern.edu.

The due date for applications is Friday, May 17th. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday, May 24th.

DETAILS OF PARTICIPATION:

Participants from institutions outside the Chicago area will arrive on Sunday, July 7th and depart on Saturday, July 13th. Lodging in dormitories (single room with AC) is provided free of charge for out-of-town students from Sunday to Saturday. Each out- of-town participant is entitled to $250 toward travel expenses with receipts for air and/or ground transportation. All participants will be provided with breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday and a collective dinner on Thursday. The academic sessions begin on the morning of Monday, July 8th and end in the afternoon on Friday July 12th and run from approximately 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. All participants are expected to be on time and attend all workshops and sessions. The artist-scholar facilitators will assign readings ahead of the seminars and workshops. Due to the intensive nature of the five days together, all readings should be completed before we convene; readings will be posted on a secure website and participants will be notified by email as soon as these are available. Outside of the sessions and workshops, your time is your own to enjoy the campus and the city.
