USDOT Award Announcement
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced $4.925 million in grants to fund four new Tier 1 University Transportation Centers (UTCs) to advance research and education programs that address critical transportation challenges facing our nation.
Director Shares Center Focus
“Our country is undergoing the broadest, deepest, and longest natural experiment in the use of communications and information technology for tele-activities and e-processes in modern history,” said Hani Mahmassani, William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation, professor of civil and environmental engineering and (by courtesy) industrial engineering at Northwestern Engineering, and director of NUTC.
DOT Funds Four UTCs
Some $1 million will be devoted to research on communications technology and e-commerce’s effects on travel demand. This initiative will be led by Northwestern University in consortium with UC Berkeley and the University of Texas at Austin.
New Asynchronous Virtual Roundtables
“The Transportation Center is at the forefront of research on urban mobility, so it is natural for us to bring the transportation community together to feature the best in current thinking and practices in how to restore urban mobility and the economies of our cities,” said Hani S. Mahmassani, director of the Transportation Center. “The pandemic has created unique challenges for mobility providers. Hearing directly from industry leaders helps guide those working on effective solutions that leverage new technologies and data-driven strategies.”
