Return to normalcy

By Victoria Hwang, Public Health in Europe, Fall 2012

Today was the first day of classes back in Evanston. It’s a strange feeling, coming back to normalcy (Tech, campus, Norris, Sheridan, the good old familiar Chicago winter -sarcasm on the latter- ) after a semester full of new people, culture, and sights. It’s been great to see old friends again, and I’m glad to be back, but I will always miss my experience in Paris. I’ve been very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to see such a beautiful city, its art, its cuisine, and of course its people. I departed promising my host mom that I would write to her and confirming my already firm decision to go back to Paris one day.

On this trip, I’ve learned so much not only about public health, but also on seeing the world from a different perspective. From my conversations with my host mom on anything ranging from French politics to world celebrities to eating lunch along the Seine, my experiences have helped me to see life as the French see it – with their values, definitions, and mindset. I’ll miss the small winding alleys, the beige buildings, the impressive art, the well-dressed populace, the pastries, and the ever convenient metro, but I’ll be back someday to see it all again.

Thanks for the unforgettable experience, Paris, and I hope to see you soon!

Winter quarter, let’s go!
