Team Leaders
Kim Marion Suiseeya, Principal Investigator (PI), is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Environmental Policy at Northwestern University. She is also a Faculty Affiliate with the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR). Her research focuses on environmental justice and environmental governance, with an emphasis on developing justice- centered policies.
Jonathan Gilbert, Co-PI, is Director of the Biological Services Division at the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. He is a wildlife biologist and advises tribes with off- reservation treaty rights.
Josiah Hester, Co-PI, is Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering and Faculty Affiliate with CNAIR. His research explores designing, building, and deploying tiny computers that run for decades to support large-scale sensing for sustainability and conservation.
Patty Loew, Co-PI, is Director, Center for Native American and Indigenous Research. She is also Professor of Journalism, Northwestern University. She is an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She works extensively with Native youth, teaching digital storytelling skills as a way to grow the next generation of Native storytellers and land stewards.
Aaron Packman, Co-PI, is Director, Center for Water Research and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on water, sediments, and microbiota, with particular emphasis on the basic processes that control interfacial dynamics in aquatic systems and the coupling of physical transport processes with biological and biogeochemical processes.
