Record Video in Canvas

This page is related to Audio & Video

At a Glance

Canvas offers flexible options for adding video content to your course site, including recording directly to Canvas using the Rich Text Editor (the same toolset used to add text and images to a page).

Recording in the Rich Content Editor

Video and audio can be recorded directly to Canvas using your webcam and a microphone. This is a convenient way to record an impromptu announcement video or provide assignment feedback as a recorded, instead of written, message.

In Canvas, video content can be recorded on any page that uses the Rich Text Editor:

  • Announcements
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Pages
  • Quizzes
  • Syllabus

Make videos using the Rich Text Editor when:

  • the recording is less than 15 minutes long.
  • you have a stable Internet connection when you record the media.
  • the content is informal and unscripted.
  • the content is only relevant to the current quarter or section.

To ensure all course video and audio recordings are accessible, they should have captions or be accompanied by a transcript. Learn how to add captions to videos in the Rich Content Editor.

Conclusion

Use the recording functionality in Canvas’s Rich Content Editor to create informal videos that are applicable to your current class, such as a discussion summary, your thoughts on recent research or events, assignment feedback, or a class announcement. Use Panopto or other embedded sources for more formal videos that are a permanent part of the course content.
