Embedding External Media

At a Glance

Once you have vetted and reviewed external content to use in your Canvas course, you will need to add it to your course site. Listed below are the necessary steps for embedding external media resources in your Canvas site.

Overview

External resources often included an option to link or embed the media, article, or website into a course site using a link or embedding code. Each option has pros and cons and can be decided by how you want the information to be viewed by your students. When you link a resource, you create a clickable URL that takes students to an external website or document in a new window. In contrast, embedding places the actual content – whether it’s a video, document, or other media – directly into the Canvas page itself. This means your students can interact with the content without having to leave Canvas or open another browser window.

Embedding External Media into Canvas

  • Navigate to the video, playlist, or audio file you want to share and locate the embed code. These sources might include YouTube, LinkedIn Learning, and SoundCloud to name a few. The embed code is normally labeled “Share,” represented by a curved arrow.
  • Select and copy the embed code.
  • Navigate to the Canvas course page where your video will be embedded and open the content editor. Place your cursor where you want to add the media, then select the insert/edit media icon within the editor, which will open another window
  • Select”Embed” and paste your custom code into the field. Click submit to complete this process.
  • Save your edits in Canvas.
