These steps will explain how to use Canvas Video in a web browser to record a webcam video. We recommend this video tool for recording video feedback on course assignments.

Using Video for Instructor Feedback in SpeedGrader

  • Access the Assignment or Discussion Post
    • Navigate to your course site on Canvas.
    • Open the assignment or discussion post for which you want to provide video feedback.
    • Locate the specific student submission or discussion reply.
  • Open the Rich Content Editor
    • Click on Add a Comment in the submission feedback area or the reply box in a discussion post.
    • In the toolbar, locate and click the Record/Upload Media icon (a small play button) near the Panopto and Google Drive icons.
  • Set Up Your Recording
    • When the Media Recorder opens, select your camera and microphone from the available input device options.
    • Adjust your video and audio settings for optimal quality (e.g., ensure good lighting and minimal background noise).
    • If prompted, allow browser permissions for the camera and microphone.
  • Record Your Video
    • Press the Start Recording button.
    • Provide your feedback, keeping it concise and aligned with your assessment criteria.
    • When finished, click Stop Recording.
  • Review and Upload Your Video
    • If satisfied, click save to up-load the video. If not select delete and re-record.
    • Once uploaded. your video feedback will be visible to the student in the Canvas feedback section or discussion thread.

Tips for Effective feedback

  • Keep your tone constructive and encouraging.
  • Highlight specific strengths and areas for improvement in the student’s work.
  • Aim for a video length of 1–3 minutes to ensure clarity and engagement.
