Heather Brown

Learning Designer

I started working for Distance Learning as a contractor in in January of 2022 and moved into a full time role in May of 2023.

My career journey

I have worked as a Learning Designer since 2013, primarily serving graduate and professional studies programs in not-for-profit higher education institutions. My work is deeply rooted in my experience as an undergraduate and graduate instructor across face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online course delivery, which I began as a graduate teaching assistant in 2004. I have a PhD in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing from Hollins University, located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Roanoke, Virginia.

My inspiration

My interest in learning design grew out of a desire to continuously improve and elevate my own teaching and to support others who sought to do the same. I came to find there exists a robust field of study and practice devoted to exactly that! Through my many course design projects, I’ve enjoyed creating meaningful partnerships with Subject Matter Experts who share a commitment to adult learning.

Where I’m from/Where I am at

I love where I live, which is the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.

My interests outside of work

When I’m not working, I’m likely to be found walking around Chicago, exploring restaurants, art museums, live music, and comedy performances.

Rewards of my job

What I find most rewarding about my work is the endless opportunities for learning through collaboration.
