Instructional Technologist
2022
My career journey
I received my B.S from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and my M.S. from Dominican University. I have held summer jobs that included loading docks, glove cutting, adult tutor, and mock interviewer. After graduating with my undergraduate degree I joined Teach for America and became an elementary school teacher. I received my M.S. during this time and taught for 8 years before transitioning to my position as an instructional technologist.
My inspiration
I was always fascinated by technology as a child and would explore various free software and troubleshoot any issues my parents had with their desktop computer. There were plenty of times were I accidently downloaded malware and had to find a solution. In high school, with no prior experience, I independently created a website for my family’s recreational soccer team. However, these opportunities to delve into technology were often few and far between.
Although I had a deep interest in technology, my initial path led me to education, as an elementary school teacher. It was during this period that I found opportunities to research and implement technology in the learning experiences of my students. I developed a drive for and honed my skills in creating educational media and integrating technology solutions in my classroom to enhance both learning outcomes and student engagement.
This influenced me to make a transition to online/distance education to further explore explore and build my skills and expertise in providing high quality learning experiences for adult learners.
Where I’m from/Where I am at
I was born and raised in Humboldt Park, Chicago. Except for the four years I was away in Champaign for my undergraduate studies, I have been living in in this beautiful city all my life.
My interests outside of work
Physical health is very important to me. I enjoy creating at home calisthenics exercise routines and getting in a good jog or bike session every other day. I also enjoy painting and have created several art pieces that I have hanging in my home (I am a novice).
Rewards of my job
What I find most rewarding about my position is that I am able to collaborate, and develop courses and projects with intelligent and creative individuals. My colleagues provide me feedback and recommendations that help me gain a better perspective of the type of work we do. I very much enjoy being a member of this department.
