Senior Learning Designer

2016

My career journey

After college, I became a Special Education Teacher. I stayed in the role for about five years. During that time, a group came by and made a presentation about joining a cohort to participate in an Instructional Designer Masters Program. After I finished my degree, I because an Instructional Designer at a local college before working at Northwester.

My inspiration

As a Special Education Teacher, I became aware of individual learning needs and made it my goal to foster inclusive classrooms. My interest in learning design and technology stems from a desire to create innovative and accessible educational pathways, reaching students beyond the confines of traditional settings and empowering them to thrive

Where I’m from/Where I am at

I’m originally from McAllen, Texas, which lies at the tip of the state right by the Mexican border. After my husband was accepted into Seminary, we made the choice to move to the Chicago area.

My interests outside of work

I love to write. My original passion is screenwriting, but over the years my work has expanded into two YA Novels, an audio drama, and an upcoming Table Top Role Playing Game.

Rewards of my job

I think the best thing about my job is that it allows me to incorporate things I enjoy into my work. For example, the using of gamification in course design really stood out to me, especially as someone who has an appreciation for old school games. I’ve even been able to utilize storytelling techniques by applying creative narratives to various course elements, such as quizzes.
