Northwestern’s annual TEACHx conference showcases ways that instructors are experimenting with new approaches to teaching and learning. Join this thoughtful conversation from across the University as instructors share their insights gleaned from experiments in blended and online learning as well as the use of technologies to enhance student engagement and learning.
This year’s keynote speaker is physicist and Olin College founding faculty member Dr. Yevgeniya V. Zastavker. Join her as she shares her journey of learning, unlearning, and relearning, and as she ultimately imagines a new, collaborative, and engaging educational paradigm.
Dr. Zastavker will be helping us consider how we as teachers can help our students reckon with the open-ended, ill-defined, and deep problems that cannot be solved using a technical-rational-empirical approach. As Alvin Toffler suggests, to solve these kinds of problems, we need to be able to “learn, unlearn, and relearn.” She will explore:
- What does an environment of learning, unlearning, and relearning look like?
- How do we engage with student development?
- How do we embrace tough or uncomfortable conversations in our classrooms regardless of their content?
- How do we not allow the unspoken politics of “professionalism” silence us even as our students engage in profoundly important conversations about what they care about?
- How do we all come together in an “unceasing process of inquiry… in the common pursuit of knowledge” (von Humboldt, 1809) to support and witness authentic and critical learning?
Please consider attending TEACHx 2018 on Wednesday, May 23rd. This year it will be held on the Chicago campus.
