How secure are biometric scanners? In Samsung’s Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor fooled by 3D printed fingerprint, Andrew Liptak at The Verge discusses how one individual was able to use a 3D print of their fingerprint to gain access to their mobile device. Liptak highlight’s the concern over this revelation since financial institutions and sensitive accounts are relying on fingerprint scanners for account access more frequently.
Our Take
New methods for unlocking your various devices and accounts continue to roll out in an attempt to further secure your privacy and data. Although biometric authentication can be much more secure than a simple password, it is not a 100% fool-proof form on authentication. In reality, there are very few ways to completely protect your account from the vast array of technology and malicious attacks in the world. However, there are many ways to make your accounts and devices as secure as possible to reduce the risk of account/device exposure significantly. Biometric authentication such as fingerprint sensors and facial recognition can be a great way to reduce the ability for strangers to access your information. Enabling such security measures when they are offered is a great step to securing your data. Additionally, using multi-factor authentication whenever possible and reducing the amount of highly sensitive and financial information stored on your accounts and devices will further protect your privacy.
