Automatic App Updates

In the News

App updating gets a new feature on Android devices. In Android developers can now force app updates, Frederic Lardinois discusses the rollout of forced updates on a new feature called Inline Updates. Lardinois explains that this feature was first announced last year, but that its implementation will allow for more frequent update compliance and for developers to get security fixes to consumers much easier.

Our Take

App updates are crucial to not only ensuring a positive app experience but also for securing the personal information of users stored within the apps. Security flaws and vulnerabilities are inevitable given the constant innovation in tech, and although updates are rollout frequently, they are not always installed as quickly and as often as necessary. By allowing updates to be forced onto consumers, developers can ensure that all users are running the most secure version of their app. Additionally, this takes a burden off of consumers who have their devices set to update apps manuallyHopefully, this new feature will be a win for both developers and consumers in maintaining secure app habits.
