Mobile Phone as a Security Key

In the News

Two-factor authentication is getting even more secure. In Google will now let you use your Android phone as a physical security key, Shannon Liao at The Verge discusses Google’s most recent development, the ability for users of Android 7+ to use their physical phone as a security key. Liao explains that users will be able to use a combination of Bluetooth connection and proximity to a computer to access their accounts on Chrome including Gmail, G suite, and Google Cloud accounts. Liao states that a user must manually establish their Android device as a security key to have such access.

Our Take

Two-factor authentication is becoming an even more popular form of secure account access. With so many instances of data misuse, breaches, exposure, and general uncertainty regarding cyber-crime, two-factor authentication creates a sense of peace of mind for many consumers. Despite the increase in security that two-factor authentication provides, it is not fool-proof. The need for additional security measures and innovations is always present. For Android users, this now means that access to Google accounts can be made even more secure. While it may not seem like the most mind-boggling service, if you have an Android device, you should take advantage of the more secure authentication method.
