Facebook Data Sharing

In the News
Information regarding data sharing at Facebook continues to come to light. In Facebook gave Spotify and Netflix access to users’ private messages, Casey Newton at The Verge discusses a new development in the Facebook scandal surrounding data sharing without explicit user consent and in some cases, in violation of public statements made by the company. Newton details that Facebook in partnership with many other digital companies has been sharing account information as well as private messages for their use in a more social and personalized experience. Newton elaborates that such practices have continued into this year despite Facebook’s statement and laws requiring such practices to end.

Our Take

Although Facebook seems to make the news for its data sharing policies and mistakes most often, they are by no means the only tech company sharing user data with or without consent. Data sharing and data selling are common practices among tech companies, and while the purpose of this practice is to create a better user experience, it feels like a violation of privacy. Additionally, users have different beliefs on what may be acceptable data sharing practices, and without explicit and honest communication from tech companies, consumers are unaware of what happens to their data once it is put online. Remember to always read the rules and rights of a specific platform or company before creating an account to stay aware of who might gain access to your personal information.
