Increasing Need for Cybersecurity and Privacy

In the News
As consumers and businesses rely on the internet more and more, privacy issues arise. In Privacy a Key Concern for Telecoms and Consumers, Kacy Zurkus at InfoSecurity Magazine discusses a 2018 report which found that privacy is an increasing concern for society with over half of surveyed consumers stating such. Zurkus furthers that both consumers and companies think cybersecurity is a growing issue and that both of these audiences support the need for paid cybersecurity services.

Our Take

Privacy is a hot topic in every aspect of society these days. From sharing information on social media to utilizing smart devices in our daily lives, it feels as though more and more of our personal information is being shared with the world. Also, on top of choosing to share information, data breaches and exposures at large companies seem to occur more and more frequently. While society is heading in the direction of more explicit data use and sharing policies, it is no surprise that society as a whole is still concerned about the privacy of their personal lives and information. Making services such as paid cybersecurity services more available and affordable can be an easy way for both businesses and consumers to take the initiative in protecting their privacy. As with all things technology and internet-based, researching products and services before downloading or purchasing them is also a decisive action to protect your online privacy.

Recommendations

How can you protect your privacy in a technology-based world?

  • Understand the risks of putting your personal information into the world, and only share what you have to
  • Minimize the number of accounts and devices that have direct access to your bank account or card numbers
  • Invest in a cybersecurity service to add increased protection to your accounts and devices
  • Don’t reuse your account passwords, and take advantage of multi-factor authentication where possible.
  • Stay up to date on the news regarding recent fraud and phishing attacks to see if you may have been affected
