Apple is taking an initiative to provide a more accessible data usage policy and practices. In Apple will now let US users download all of their data, Russell Brandom at The Verge discusses how US users are now allowed to download all of their data from Apple, months after European Union citizens were provided the option. Brandom explains that this is one of Apple’s ongoing attempts to provide transparency to its users regarding data practices and privacy. He elaborates that in order to download your data, one must provide their Apple ID information.
Our Take
In today’s environment, our data use is extensive. Despite this, not many people know what the extent of their data is or why it is important to keep such data private. The ability for users to download their data allows for user education on their own data as well as on a company’s data policies. Apple’s efforts to encourage safe data use by encouraging multi-factor authentication and utilizing privacy settings signals a change in how company’s respond to customer opinions regarding data use. Downloading your data may or may not be necessary to every individual, but the option to do so seems like a fundamental right that you as the consumer should have.
