Facial ID in iPhones

In the News

In Face ID in iOS 12 can now recognize two different people, Tom Warren discusses a possible new feature in an iOS update that will allow each phone to store facial recognition information for two faces. Warren states that this feature is most likely designed to recognize the devices owner if they look slightly different, but can be used on different people entirely such as for a family sharing one device.

Our Take

This new setting brings FaceID in line with fingerprint authentication on phones, which frequently also allow the option for multiple users access to the device.  A more privacy-oriented change would allow for mean multiple accounts on phones, rather than multiple logins to the same account.

It’s also worth noting that there are still a number of concerns about the accuracy of facial recognition software, which has been known to accept a variety of workarounds in place of a person’s actual face.  For now, it may be worth sticking with fingerprints–preferably, only your own.

Recommendations

  • Give new forms of authentication some time to mature before enabling them on your devices:  exposure to the general public is the best trial by fire, and the improvements that come afterward can help guarantee your security
  • Try to avoid shared logins on devices unless they are absolutely necessary
  • If you are sharing the login for your devices, take advantage of secure/encrypted folders for your most sensitive information and do not auto-login to sensitive apps
