Dating App Hinge, Now Accessible with Phone Number

In the News

In Hinge will no longer require you to log in via Facebook, Andrew Liptak discusses the dating app, Hinge, and its new login method–one that does not require a Facebook account. Liptak states that this new option comes as more and more companies move away from requiring the linkage of Facebook or other social media sites to create an account.

Our Take

This is good news.  Using the same login for multiple accounts creates two distinct risks:

  • One or both companies that own your account(s) may share some degree of information about you with one another–with or without your knowledge
  • Compromise of credentials in one account may lead to compromise of every account that uses those credentials

It may seem convenient to log into multiple services using an existing account, but these risks should be weighed against that convenience.

Recommendations

So how can you protect your personal information?

  • Use alternative forms of login besides social media accounts to more strictly control how much personal information is shared with an app
  • Only provide the minimum information required to gain access to services
  • Always create a unique and strong password for each new account, and use a password database to keep track of these credentials
