In this session we will provide an overview of GIS, resources available to you as a graduate student and demonstrate how you can use GIS in your research. After this session you will have the tools to get started and begin mapping your research.

Learning Goals:
Understanding of GIS, GIS resources offered by the library, how GIS can be applicable to a graduate student’s field of study.

Navigating the Non-linear Research Process

Time: This session has passed and is no longer active.

Location: University Library, Forum Room (Level 2 South)

Description:
This session will explore the messiness of research. We talk and write about discrete parts of the process, but each is interconnected. Writing an outline can illuminate an idea previously unexplored in analysis, and a comment from another scholar can ask us to consider a different theoretical approach. Presenters will draw on real-world examples of non-linear research from various disciplines and illuminate tools and services that can help you navigate it. Keeping these pitfalls and opportunities in mind will normalize these potentially stressful experiences and help you mitigate them.

Learning Goals:
Participants will consider the pitfalls and opportunities of the research process. Participants will learn strategies and services that can help navigate the non-linear research process.

Presenters:
Jason Kruse, Undergraduate Services Librarian, jkruse@northwestern.edu; and Gina Petersen, Assessment Librarian, gina.petersen@northwestern.edu
