Workshops: Frequently Asked Questions

Are all workshops remote? When will in-person workshops resume?

As of Spring Quarter 2020, all workshops are being taught remotely. The university has decided that all programming will continue to be remote through at least the end of Summer 2020, but it is likely that remote workshops will continue to be offered for some time. To stay up-to-date with the latest news about RCS workshops, join our email listserv.

Will the workshops be recorded?

Currently we do not offer recorded workshops, but there are many excellent online resources for learning these skills. See the Research Computing Services Training Page  and our curated online learning resource guides for online training options and other resources.

I’m not affiliated with Northwestern. Can I attend a remote workshop?

Unless otherwise stated in the workshop registration info, unfortunately no. These workshops have limited spots available and are subsidized with university resources. They are only open to Northwestern students, postdocs, faculty, and staff. A valid Northwestern NetID is required.

What software do I need to participate in a remote workshop?

Online workshops are held on Zoom. Specific software and package requirements for each workshop will be emailed out the day before the workshop. In general, R workshops require R and RStudio; Python workshops require Python and Jupyter (Lab or Notebook), but many Python workshops use only Jupyter Notebooks, which can alternatively be read on the Google Colab website without installing anything to your own computer. For more information on installations, go here.

I registered for a workshop but I haven’t yet received the Zoom link. What should I do?

Zoom links will be sent out no later than 30 minutes before the workshop. If you have not received the Zoom link by 30 minutes before the workshop, email us here. Zoom links are not automatically emailed out when you register on Eventbrite.

The workshop I want is full. What should I do?

Please join the waitlist for the workshop (from the Eventbrite registration). If folks cancel, we’ll release tickets to those on the waitlist. If there are a lot of people on the waitlist, we’ll see what we can do about offering an additional workshop (no promises!).

I can no longer attend. What should I do?

Please cancel your registration (see below) so someone else can attend instead.

How do I cancel my registration/get a refund?

You can cancel your registration through Eventbrite. Log in to your account to find your tickets, or look for the confirmation email you received from Eventbrite when you registered.
