Open Position: Research Computing Student Consultant

Location: The work will be mainly remote.

Research Computing Services is a team of research facilitators with diverse backgrounds and skills in high performance computing and data science. We work together with IT partners to help Northwestern faculty and students perform computational research across a wide breadth of research areas. As a part of our group, students experience a broad range of paradigms in scientific computing and develop new technical, consulting and teaching skills.
Responsibilities
The student consultant responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Helping researchers identify appropriate computing/data storage resources,
- Troubleshooting technical issues in computational workflows
- Developing training materials in the form of technical documentation, presentations, videos and blog posts
- Contributing to projects to improve research computing services
- Collecting and analyzing metrics for our computing cluster and developing reports
Skills required
The candidates are expected to have strong written and verbal communication and ability to work at least 10 hours per week. Depending on your interests and knowledge, the position can involve the use of one or more of the skills listed below:
- Linux environment and software installations
- Data collection, cleaning, wrangling, analysis and presentation
- A scripting language (such as Bash, Python, Java, Lua, Julia, Perl, Ruby etc.)
- A statistical analysis program (such as R, Stata, SAS, MATLAB, etc.)
- Parallel computing (such as MPI, OpenMP, Spark etc.)
- GPU computing and programming (such as CUDA, OpenACC etc.)
