Who’s Involved? | Card Handlers | Managers & Supervisors | IT Staff | Treasury Operations | Quiz
Card handlers are individuals who handle card transactions, including payments and refunds.
Examples include a department assistant who swipes cards or manually enters payment information at a terminal in a departmental office, a staff member who swipes cards at a point-of-sale (POS) system, and a student that takes a card payment over the phone and enters it into a device like those pictured and named below.
Card transactions also include issuing refunds, which requires the approval of a manager or supervisor.
If you are involved in handling transactions, you may also need to view information that customers provide. For example, a customer may provide payment information over the phone. Or, you may receive paper forms with payment information, such as donation request forms that were returned via mail.
Another task related to handling card transactions is reconciling the payment batch at the end of the day and creating a report to show what the merchant location processed that day.
Approved Card Readers
Card readers approved for use at Northwestern use a technology called point to point encryption (P2PE). This technology has been validated by the PCI council. This is not an exaustive list of approved card readers. Please speak with Treasury Operations or Arrow Payments if you have any questions about approved card readers.
