HISTORY

ITRI conducted dog life-span experiments on a variety of fission products including 90Sr – 90Y, 91Y, 95Zr – 95Nb, 106Ru -106Rh, 131I, 137Cs -137mBa, 140Ba -140La, and 144Ce -144Pr, radionuclides that predominate in a reactor inventory after a period of sustained operation. Subsequently, investigations were extended to include plutonium and transplutonium elements associated with breeder reactors. Long term rodent studies at ITRI include repeated inhalation exposures of 239Pu or 144Ce oxide , cigarette smoke, and 4) injected chemical carcinogens. Additional long-term studies have involved inhaled 244Cm oxide, injected Thorotrast and 239Pu citrate.
