Director, NUSeq Core Facility at Northwestern University
Our multi-million-dollar core operation is entirely built on NUcore. Without the efficiency provided by this tailor-designed platform, we won’t be able to grow to our current size from under a million within just a few years. Adding new users and payment sources is very quick since the system is well integrated with other systems in our institution. We receive new orders continuously during the day, and bill on a monthly basis. Core staff pick up right away on order tracking, and for billing there is no need to know accounting. The reporting function is very handy for getting a glimpse of the core’s productivity in a set period and annual core report preparation. Because it is a tailor-designed and open system, new functions are added all the time to meet new needs or optimize performance.

Corum works great for all of the following reasons: It records expenses by user on all facilities and allows us to access the information at any time. When in review, we can quickly verify the information, times and cost by user and by facility (sorting function is phenomenal) and can easily make changes to the funding used, if needed. Adding and removing new and graduated members of the lab is easy, as is assigning them access to particular funding sources. This past month, with 16 different users accessing 6 different facilities with over 100 facility use times recorded, we could quickly verify that the info was correct, adjust funding sources easily, where needed, provide access to new funding sources for several users and in a couple of cases request that the Director check into a possible problem with the data recorded.
Couldn’t think of a better system for managing all of this activity.

While CORUM isn’t meant for accounting, it does a nice job of helping to streamline expenses with respect to certain projects and purchase orders. It also clearly indicates associations between Professors and their students and allows both accounting personnel and PIs to accurately track which funds are being spent and by whom. I can report what is outstanding and what has been paid in large groupings by vendor and see the history of payments and notifications.
