Can AI techniques help predict terrorist attacks, reshape terror group behavior, and destabilize terror networks? Can AI techniques help us achieve better outcomes in diplomatic negotiations? Can AI help predict cyber-attacks before they occur, develop verifiable cyber-risk models, detect and mitigate attacks in real-time when they do occur, and build models of cyber actors in order to attribute attacks quickly and correctly? Can AI help protect against intellectual property theft and detect malware before it ever occurs?
Jointly housed by the Northwestern Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, the Northwestern Security & AI Lab (NSAIL) performs fundamental research in AI that is relevant to these and other questions related to cybersecurity and international security. Work by our staff has been presented at both academic conferences and venues such as the UN, Capitol Hill, and the Mumbai Stock Exchange, and featured in outlets such as The Economist, Science, Nature, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.
