Since 2013, Northwestern University has recognized International Education Week as a time to honor the increased representation of international students on campus, as well as the richness of the resulting college experience that prepares all Wildcats to be global citizens.
This year, Northwestern Libraries highlights just a few of our many and diverse collections that support the cross-cultural dialog that makes our university a teeming hub of global exchange.
Herskovits Library of African Studies
Established in 1954, Northwestern’s Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies is the largest separate Africana collection in existence. Its scope is as wide as the continent of Africa itself; its subject matter ranges from art, history, literature, music, science, technology and religion to communications, engineering, management and cooking. It serves Northwestern faculty and students, as well as more than a thousand U.S. and international scholars each year.
Its work goes beyond the collection of material to its work with campus partners to further our understanding of Africa. Examples include:
Histoire des organisations d’étudiants africains en France, 1900-1950, Amady Aly Dieng, 2011.
Under the French colonial systems, Africans had little access to higher education; the main objective was to train auxiliary civil servants. At the end of World War II in France, the number of African higher education students increased due to scholarships. The period of 1945-1950 saw the birth of political organizations and trade unions by African students studying in France, to fight in favor of independence.
Africa at Northwestern & Chicago
The Herskovits Library and the Program of African Studies have teamed up to provide a central portal for the many resources Northwestern offers for students from Africa, or who plan to travel there, or who just are interested in learning more. Categories include Programs, Academic & Research Resources, Arts Organizations, Student Organizations, and Funding Sources
Periodicals: News from across the globe
Newspapers are a great way to know the world we live in, and the Libraries have access to newspapers from all over the world to help students get — or stay — connected. Sometimes you’re away and want to know what’s going on back home or you want that comfort of reading something familiar. Or maybe you’re getting ready to take a trip abroad and are looking to get familiar with where you’re going, or to work on your language skills. Here are a couple of great highlights:
Press Reader
From Popular Science Turkey to Cosmopolitan Romania to GQ South Africa, PressReader provides access to recent newspapers and magazines from over 100 countries and languages, displayed as they were printed. It’s the next best thing to holding the real thing in your hand.
Access World News
Access World News has access to thousands of international newspapers with both rich historical content and coverage of current events. When you’re looking for news from a particular place, it’s easy to navigate to different regions or countries using a simple map function.
Turkish Studies
The Libraries’ collection supports the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Program in the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Studies at Northwestern University, which offers opportunities to foster development of an interdisciplinary platform for connecting with, investing in, and studying modern Turkey. The program sponsors a competition for research grants in modern Turkish studies for Northwestern faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students, and also funds scholars from Turkey to teach and pursue research at Northwestern.
Examples of this collection include:
Social Media and Politics in Turkey: A Journey Through Citizen Journalism, Political Trolling, and Fake News, Erkan Saka, 2020.
Saka focuses on media in some critical and oppositional aspects of internet usage within Turkey. This book discusses citizen journalism practices as well as disinformation campaigns. The book pays tribute to digital activists and points out that mobilizing through digital networks can present glimmers of hope in challenging authoritarian regimes.
#WeAreArrested, Pippa Hill, 2019
Hill’s play adapted from Can Dündar’s memoir of his arrest for publishing footage of Turkish State Intelligence sending weapons into Syria. The play was adapted by Sophie Ivatts and Pippa Hill from the Royal Shakespeare Company and was presented in London at the Arcola Theatre in the Fall of 2019. A review of the work published in the Financial Times states, “It is an affecting 75-minute chamber piece, directed by Ivatts, that captures the loneliness of a man sticking to his principles in the face of a state that brands truth as treachery.”
Atatürk on Screen: Documentary Film and the Making of a Leader, Enis Dinç, 2020.
This is a study of the screen image of Atatürk created immediately after World War I. The main analysis in the book is of the film footage itself, including rare contemporary cinematic sources which have never received comprehensive analysis before. The book also makes use of other primary sources such as letters, memoirs, newspapers, reports, newsletters and production files, providing readers with a multi-layered account of the period.
Government Information
This collection of public resources includes global perspectives provided through intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) such as the United Nations, Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD), World Health Organization, and many others. Librarians can guide researchers through the myriad relevant resources that come from government-funded bodies.
For example, OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) allows international comparisons of educational systems, student learning and future prospects for students in many nations. PISA results are used to support development in low- and middle income countries interested in education reform as well as to promote the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for quality and equity of learning outcomes for children, young people and adults. PISA 2018 Volume VI is the latest report entitled, Are Students Ready to Thrive in an Interconnected World?
Sustainable Development Goals Book Club is geared to readers aged 6-12 to help them learn about this United Nations initiative to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. A monthly book list focuses on one of the 17 goals as diverse as fighting poverty, eradicating hunger, and protecting human rights. Additional resources linked here include a blog with posts from participating book groups, resources to organize book groups, and more. An archive of previous monthly book lists is also available.
Music Library
Among the largest music collections in the United States, the Music Library has an unmatched strength in 20th century and contemporary classical music, and holds at least one copy of nearly every new score published since 1945. Music librarians can help guide people to resources that enable performance, encourage the creation of new musical works, and help us understand the place and importance of music in the lives of people and cultures spanning the globe. Two highlights are:
Smithsonian Global Sound
This streaming audio database will bring the world’s music to your ears. Building on a core collection of Smithsonian Folkways recordings, users are able to search by country, genre and peoples. Many recordings are “field recordings”, captured by music ethnographers studying the indigenous populations of the world. Many other recordings are commercially produced in the countries of origin. Whatever the source, this tool offers a chance to explore music from around the world.
The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music
A 10-volume online encyclopedia, users can learn about the music and cultures from across the globe. Each volume explores an entire continental region, and topics range from small music “scenes” to high “art” music created by different cultures. Each entry is authored by a leading expert in that style of music.
