Making Music – Connecting Communities
We are inviting Northwestern students and faculty to participate in our two interactive afternoon workshops featuring Arabic and Hebrew language and culture, and music and community-building across cultural divides. The first workshop is intended for students to engage with the singers using English, Arabic, and Hebrew, while learning some of their songs.  In the second workshop, singers will involve students in discussions and interactive activities on how music making can connect communities and cultures. In both workshops, there will be ample time for questions and answers and connecting with workshop attendees and singers. Space is limited. Please register below to save your seat.

Workshop I

Arabic and Hebrew Language and Music: Resonances Across Traditions
The Jerusalem Youth Chorus will use their songs as a language-teaching tool for students of Arabic and Hebrew, and will explore linguistic and cultural connections between these two languages and the communities that speak them.

This workshop is for students and faculty of Hebrew and Arabic as well as heritage learners.

 

 

Workshop II

Music and Social Change: Approaches from Jerusalem to Chicago
The Jerusalem Youth Chorus and Uniting Voices Chicago will engage students in a discussion of modalities of musical change-making, specifically exploring the models of these two justice- and unity-focused ensembles, and the critical roles that youth voices can play in making musical-social impact.

This workshop is for all students interested in music and its potential for social change.
