Cultivating Microbial Dark Matter

Experiments targeting microbial dark matter, microorganisms that are detectable via genomic surveys but are yet to be cultivated, are currently underway in the Osburn Lab. We use geochemical and metagenomic data collected from the Deep Mine Microbial Observatory to guide our efforts to craft custom media recipes mimicking deep fracture fluids. Anaerobic culturing is made possible through the use of specialized equipment in the lab, including our anaerobic Coy chamber and gas manifold for creating custom gas mixtures.
