Welcome to the Northwestern Music Cognition Lab!
The Northwestern University Music Cognition Lab investigates fundamental aspects of music and music making.
The projects in the Lab explore cognitive aspects of music:
- How music is organized and structured
- How people acquire their understandings of such structural elements of music
- The meanings people draw from those structures
We also investigate musical skill, its development, and how music learning (both formal and informal) is shaped by biology and experience. Through the methods of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience we seek to clarify the cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions of musical thought and behavior and their correlates in brain structure and function.
