Mariam Fofana
Institution: Northwestern University
Mariam Fofana is a second-year student at Northwestern University, majoring in Anthropology and History, with a prospective minor in Black Studies. Her academic focus is on the intersections of material and language in culture-making and social practices. As a member of the Material History Lab, Mariam is collaborating with Professor Akinwumi Ogundiran to investigate the social lives of metal artifacts from Ede-Ile, a colony of the Oyo Empire, from 1600 to 1840. She is studying forms and functions of metal objects in their domestic contexts and combining them with primary and secondary sources to understand everyday lives, historical practices, and cultural legacies in one of the Oyo Empire’s highly successful colonies. She enjoys sewing and embarking on food tours around Chicagoland in her free time.
