It is most helpful if you explain your interest in the lab, your background (relevant courses or experience, if any), and how much you’re willing/able to work per week. We typically ask for a 3-quarter commitment from our research assistants. Work in the lab is done on a volunteer-basis, though working for credit is also possible (after at least 1 quarter in the lab).
