I’m Professor in the Psychology Department and Interdepartmental Program in Neuroscience at Northwestern University, where I study the brain bases of creative cognition and problem solving, how mood affects attention and cognition, and how the right and left sides of the brain differ in function. My research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the John Templeton Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. I’m a Kavli fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and have served on multiple National Science Foundation advisory panels.

(I don’t plan on taking new graduate students applying in Fall of 2024).
